Research: Darvaza Gas Crater (a.k.a.) Gates of Hell is a huge crater of fire situated in the Karakum Desert. The desert is located in Turkmenistan – a central Asian country. Furthermore, it is currently one among the very largest gas reserves present across the globe. As it was burning approximately for the last 5 decades, it was termed as the Gates of Hell. Many scientists and PhD research across the planet could not figure out the exact reason for the continuous burning of the crater. The dimensions of this crater range from a whopping diameter of 230 ft and extend up to 66 ft depth.
History
The place was first spotted by the Soviet engineers in the year 1971. For the purpose of utilizing the oil present in the location, they drilled the land surface with the aid of a drilling rig. As a result of their survey, a resource of natural gas was found. But in a very short period of time, the land started to collapse due to the continuous drilling. Hence the drilled hole gets extended into an enormous crater.
A large amount of methane which is a poisonous gas has started to spread over the entire crater. With the intention to prevent the continuous spreading of methane into the environment, the geologists set the crater on fire. They came up with this decision as they have expected the gas to completely burn out within a span of a few weeks.
Whereas, the crater continues to burn till date. Some local people surrounding the place started to call it with the name of Gates of Hell. This is due to the reason of continuous burning without any stoppage from the exterior. People have tried to set out the fire but ultimately failed in their mission.
Effect – PhD Research
The entire place was dehydrated completely due to the Darvaza Gas Crater and as a result of this rain have not shown up for many years. Numerous Research was being performed until now by many people to identify the science involved in the continuous burning of the crater for nearly half a century. But still, no one can figure out the reason behind this mystery and awesomeness. Visit us PhDiZone
